HOW MOSAIC WORKS

Ground uncertainty does not resolve itself at contract award. Mosaic is a SaaS platform that can be applied at any point in a project lifecycle; from early planning through construction completion; and continuously updating its probabilistic ground model as new data arrives.

DURING PLANNING AND PROCUREMENT:

Quantify geotechnical variability

Identify where uncertainty is highest and where additional investigation will reduce risk most effectively. Direct investigation budgets to where they matter.

Evaluate programme and cost exposure

Assess the impact of geotechnical variability on initial programme estimates before commitment. Contingency resourced against evidence, not optimism.

Inform contractual risk allocation

Understand the residual risks from GBR baselines relative to the available data and geological model. Tenderers can assess their exposure. Clients can evaluate the quality of bids.

As construction proceeds, new information — probing, geophysics, TBM performance data, monitoring — is integrated to update and recalibrate the ground model continuously.

Updated risk forecasts inform changes to TBM operating parameters, support decisions about additional investigation, and enable intervention before conditions deteriorate.

Evaluate geotechnical models against initial predictions. Deviations from baseline are identified early — before they become claims or losses.

Legal remedies and insurance are no substitute for facilitated performance. Mosaic maintains a version-controlled record of expected versus encountered conditions for the life of the project.

WHY GOOD QUANTIFICATION MATTERS

The ground is certain. Our knowledge of it is not.

​Evidence from decades of major project commercial losses points to the same upstream shortcoming: ground condition uncertainty poorly defined and allocated at contract formation.

But a GBR is only as defensible as the uncertainty quantification behind it.

Leading contributor to the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management in Tunnels (3rd Edition, 2023). Technical author of the SafeWork NSW Tunnelling Code of Practice (2026). Jacob Grasmick

Specialist in geostatistics, probabilistic ground modelling, and the application of advanced computational methods to tunnelling risk. Based at Emprise Concepts, Denver, CO, with a research focus on bringing quantitative geotechnical uncertainty methods into practical project use.

Lead developer of the Mosaic software. Current development includes extending the platform to long linear infrastructure and natural terrain landslides in Colorado and Alaska.
